Broad Based Light (BBL) therapy eliminates unwanted hair. BBL is controlled flashes of light that penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the hair follicles. The heat damages the hair and minimises the potential for regrowth.

Because of the significantly large spot size created by this unique technology, larger areas such as backs, shoulders, abdomens and legs can be treated quickly. Smaller areas such as the lip, chin, and beard, can also be treated in minutes.

Why BBL over IPL Hair Removal?

The BBL provides a safer, faster, more effective and more comfortable treatment than traditional IPL and laser methods. The BBL technology also allows for an extremely even heating of the hair follicles and can target more hair follicles during a single treatment.

By providing energy in multiple bursts instead of all at once, the BBL keeps the skin protected and progressively raises the follicle temperature to the therapeutic level for hair removal. In doing so the BBL is also able to effectively treat the highest risk skin types.

The BBL hand-piece provides continuous cooling during treatment to keep the skin cool, making the treatment much more comfortable than other methods. The treatment time is less due to the power and repetition rate of the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

+How should I prepare for my treatment?

There are a few pre-treatment instructions that must be adhered too prior to having BBL hair removal.

These include:

No plucking or waxing the hair for at least 6 weeks prior to treatment

Ensure the area has been shaved the day of the treatment

Avoid sun exposure, sun tanning or fake tan in the 2 weeks prior to treatment

Avoid any cosmetics or creams on the area on the day of treatment.

This is to ensure the hair follicles to be treated are intact and the surrounding skin remains at less risk of damage during the treatment.

+How does BBL Hair Removal work?

BBL is short for Broad Band Light. It is a treatment that removes hair through a process called photo-epilation. This is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, where light energy is absorbed into the target hair follicles while sparing the surrounding, healthy skin tissue.

While it is still a light source, BBL works differently than conventional laser systems. Instead, BBL systems use a broad light spectrum of light with wavelengths ranging from 590 to 1200 nm (green, yellow, orange, red and infrared). The wavelengths emit light energy in carefully timed pulses to maximise the effectiveness of the treatment.  At the same time decreases the risk of skin damage and minimise pain.

+What does the BBL treatment involve?

During the treatment, a gel is applied to the treatment area in order to focus the light energy and cool the top skin layer. A handheld device is then placed on the skin and the treatment begins. The light energy heats and damages the hair follicle, typically causing follicle to stop functioning. BBL technology allows your doctor provide a procedure that is gentle and non-invasive.

BBL systems can also be customised to your specific skin colour, hair colour and hair density. It can be used on a wide range of hair colours, from light brown to dark black hair. It also removes hair from all skin types. Complexions from porcelain white through olive to dark brown. Hair on most parts of the body can be treated, no matter how deep the follicles reside. Sensitive areas like the lips, ears, nose, underarms, and bikini line can usually be easily tolerated.

BBL can also treat very large areas at one time. Approximately 100 to 200 hairs can be treated with each flash of the light.  Larger patches of hair on the legs, back and chest can be treated quickly in a single session. It can also be used for small delicate areas as well. Because of the length of time associated with other hair removal treatments, BBL may be a fast way to achieve a hair-free look.

As with other laser procedures, multiple treatment sessions are typically required for long-lasting hair removal.

+Are there any side effects?

It is possible for patients to experience a warm or tingling sensation. We always discuss side effects in your consult with our therapist.

+How long will it take to see results?

Because every patient is different, results will vary depending on certain factors. Most patients start to see a decrease in hair after the second treatment and the reduction is continued throughout the course of treatments.

+How long does the BBL Hair Removal treatment last?

Long term results will depend on multiple factors such as hair thickness, the area treated and your personal hair growth cycle. This will be different for every individual and we will assess this in your initial consultation to talk about real results for you.
